[ music | Doctor Who soundtrack ]

I just got back from the midnight showing of Half Blood Prince a while ago, and overall I loved it! There were some great moments throughout, though it's been a while since I've read the book so I was occasionally getting a bit confused over what had and hadn't been changed and so on. I still remember a few things that stood out though.

Behind a cut since I get pretty detailed at times, so beware of spoilers... )

So yeah, that sums up most of the reactions I can remember having to the movie, or what I remember particularly standing out. I think I have a chance to see it again in a couple days, so I look forward to getting the perspective of a second viewing. Beyond that, the movie definitely has me excited for the last movie(s) to come out, whenever that is. :)

Note to self: never, ever, EVER join a dungeon group when your wrists are still in recovery mode and they're already starting to get a little sore from playing several hours that day. Doing so will cause your wrists to hate you, and potentially prevent you from being able to play the next day.

(It's still only potentially right now, since said dungeon happened a couple hours ago. Still, I sure can't wait until I can play for hours on end without worrying about screwing up my wrists any more...)

I'm a bit overdue for an update of some kind, so here goes. Sadly, not a whole lot going on my life at the moment, unless you count being completely stuck on my tribal leather quest chain (seriously, can't the vendor just sell the pattern for turtle scale gloves already?), or being a mere half a level away from level 16 with my rogue. Yep, I've gone and joined in the WoW frenzy. I've been playing for almost a month now, and just recently got the second expansion (shortly after my main hit 55) so I could get a death knight... not that I have one yet. I'm still focused on my main and my new rogue (who's also a gnome and an engineer, so I'm having a lot of fun with her so far).

In other news, my local library is officially buying the Doctor Who E-Space trilogy. I put it on hold through inter-library, and after sending an automated request, it went into considerations, and now it's sitting there on my account waiting for the library to buy it (so I can proceed to watch it, yay!). So yeah, it'll be nice to have more than 3 old-Who stories in the local library system (none of which feature the fourth Doctor, by the way, which is a bit weird). :D

This is my response to this week's challenge at [info]sim_scenes. The rules were to create a story with Sims 2 using a maximum of 10 pictures and no words. The prompt this week was the words Toys, Torment, and Shy. I admit that I used them a little loosely, but I promise that they're all there!

My story turned out to be a fanfic since I was anxious to try out the sims I'd recently downloaded into my game. So for background, this is a Doctor Who story, set after Journey's End. Beyond that, I'll try to let the pictures themselves do the talking.

I don't do domestics... )

I've been fangirling so hard over Doctor Who lately. Just last week, I finally got a chance to watch Doctor Who with a fellow Who fan for the first time ever. (Okay, so it was just Time Crash, but it still totally counts.) It was definitely an amazing experience that I hope to have again someday. I also get to introduce the show to a couple of my friends sometime this summer. Neither of them are really into sci-fi, but at least one of them more or less likes things like Star Wars and Star Trek, and I'm not much of a sci-fi fan either, so I think it should go okay.

The most recent exciting news, though, is that I finally got my sonic screwdriver today! I got it a bit late, since the mailman apparently forgot to put the key into our mailbox, so we didn't even know my packages were there until Amazon had updated the shipping status as 'delivered,' so I ended up running out to the mailbox at about 10:30pm to get the thing. But hey, it was totally worth it. The switch is a bit wonky for some reason, so the light and sound effects are somewhat inconsistent, but who cares? That sure hasn't stopped me from sonicing everything in existence all evening. :D

I also got a hold of some old Who today. A few stories came in the mail with my sonic screwdriver, but right now I'm watching a copy of Genesis of the Daleks I got through interlibrary loan. Yep, I'm watching my very first Old Who story right now, and I have to say that I'm loving it! New Who has infinitely better effects, of course, and Ten will probably always be 'my doctor' (he was my first, after all, and part of the reason I got into the show in the first place), but I suspect I'll end up liking both Old Who and New Who pretty equally, albeit in slightly different ways.

Anyway, Genesis of the Daleks is still sitting on pause behind me, so I'd better go back to watching so I can actually get to bed tonight. :D

I don't know what's wrong with me, but for some reason I keep getting sucked into popular fandoms. First it was Harry Potter (a few years ago), then came House, then Phoenix Wright over Christmas break, and just last night came Doctor Who of all things. I seriously never even thought I'd LIKE Doctor Who! I'm starting to think that maybe I like sci-fi a little more than I thought. And yep, I have ready access to the past four seasons (and some older seasons as well, I think) at the local library, though who knows how long the waiting list is. (Hopefully not too long, though I suppose the wisdom of checking out a full season now when I'm not really keeping up with school already is a little debateable...)

In other news, my self-imposed temporary ban on video/computer games only has a couple more weeks to go! I think I can start looking forward to playing some new Phoenix Wright games over Spring break! :D

Well, I went and did it today; I bought myself a Gamecube along with a stash of games to go with it. While I was at it, I surprised myself by tracking down a copy of Phoenix Wright! I didn't even know I wanted it a week ago, but now I'm super excited to start playing it. :D

Yay! I got my Secret Santa gift a couple days ago, and I'm already loving it! All of my free time has been spent stuck to my poor laptop ever since. It's getting late now, so I'll have to save details for later, but I've already taken plenty of screenshots, so hopefully I'll post some pictures and the like sometime in the next couple of days.

Oh, and to my Secret Santa: I'm not sure if you'll be reading this before I for-real update, but thank you very much! Sorry, I don't have M&G yet, but I still haven't run into any serious compatibility issues (nothing's crashed my game or anything). I did have a few amusing quirks that came up (that I'll probably include in my update, since some of them were pretty amusing), but I think I actually liked it that way (yes I know, I can be a bit weird...). So thank you very much; everything in your gift is being put to very good use! :D

I've now officially tried my hand at making CC for Sims 2. For whatever reason, I decided that I'd be able to pull it off, so I signed up for a secret santa exchange. Turns out it's a bit harder than I was expecting. I used to do dolling, and I've been very happy to discover that I haven't really lost too much of my pixeling/shading ability. Unfortunately, what looks good on a 2-D doll doesn't necessarily look so great on a 3-D sim, so the process is taking a whole lot longer than I anticipated. *sigh* Oh well, on the bright side, it seems to be slowly turning out okay, so hopefully no worries to my recipient. (And yeah, I'm starting to feel like I'm running a bit late, but there's still a little over a week left, and I'll have a lot more free time over the next few days now that the semester's finally over.)

Meanwhile, I'm temporarily stuck as to what I should get my sister. Should I get the one Wii game she specifically mentioned? (Because honestly, that would just be way too obvious...) Or should I go with Sims 2 with a couple expansion packs (now that Walmart has them for really cheap)? Or maybe something else altogether? Oh well, I suppose that's what I get for waiting so long to decide on gifts. Hopefully I can at least beat the worst of the Christmas rush...

*sigh* My computer is still here... defective as ever. It's actually getting even worse now, and is starting to consistently lag whenever I'm trying to open new programs. On the plus side, however, Dell has finally acknowledged that it's defective, so now I just have to wait for them to be ready to fix it. I have to say that I'm very much so looking forward to being able to play Sims 2 (and my other games...) without nearly freezing to death!

In other news, I'm starting to think that I'm incapable of sticking with a single Sim family for a good length of time. I started a Legacy-style family shortly after installing the game (in June), and right now the 3rd generation are teens, but I haven't even had a lot of interest in playing them lately. I don't know, maybe I'm too distracted by my newer Sims or something? Maybe if I could think of something random for my family to do...

After many months of waiting, I finally got my new laptop earlier this month! As part of the happiness that is my new computer, I also now have the 'real' Sims 2 game installed, along with a few random EPs. *grins* I must say, Sims 2 easily beats out Sims LifeStories... especially considering that my old laptop could barely even play LifeStories, and had me stuck playing with bad graphics. The first time I started up Sims 2 on this computer, I was seriously in love with the shiny graphics; they're easily better than anything I've had on my old laptop!

On a sadder note, I think my old laptop is continuing on in its quest to die a slow and painful death. First the CD-Rom got messed up, then the battery died. Now this week, when I started it up, the hard drive was making a really weird 'rattly' sound. It's not particularly comforting that it's not very thoroughly backed-up at all. I'm just hoping it will at least survive long enough to let me get everything properly backed-up on my external drive. Maybe I'll even get my old browser bookmarks over here... finally. It's starting to get a bit annoying not being able to find a lot of my favorite links...

After seeing this this particular quote hanging up in the dorm, I just had to make a note to myself: whenever I start putting inspirational quotes up on my walls, I must make sure they make sense, or at least mean something.

It's amazing what you can find on YouTube these days. I've been thinking lately that I really ought to try to flesh out my Josh Groban collection (which currently consists entirely of his original 'Josh Groban' CD), and though I've all but decided on getting his 'Closer' and 'Awake', I've been browsing around with the idea of making that decision even more certain than ever. Well, I managed to find quite a few of his songs on those two albums (and I'm loving them all so far, btw!), but I also came across several that had nothing to do with his CDs whatsoever. I found a nice Aragorn/Arwen music video, a Harry Potter video, and a Phantom of the Opera E/C music video. Now, this last one I watched with some trepidation, since I tend to be pretty hesitant in general about E/C fan-anything considering that most E/C fans are a little too obsessive over E/C and 'fop-bashing'... but I was very pleasantly surprised at this one! Using Josh Groban's song 'My Confession', it pretty much told the PotO story from Erik's PoV, and probably for that very reason turned out to be generally in character. It certainly helped that it was one of the better fan-made music videos out there. And just for fun: Linky!

I also happened to come across Josh Groban singing Music of the Night from PotO. Now, I did have to take into consideration that he's obviously not quite ready for this song, but once I got over that slight issue, he actually sounded pretty good!

In other [semi-related] news, I'm totally using my Amazon gift certificate from DH on the two Harry Potter text books! (I'm also assuming I'm not the only one looking forward to the eventually coming Harry Potter encyclopedia?)

It seems I've been getting a bit too skilled at randomly not practicing this summer... Even worse, I also seem to have picked up a talent for saving my practice sessions for those times when I'm struggling with allergies (at least enough to affect my singing to some extent or another). And sure enough, it seems certain today that I've got another allergy bout coming, so what do I do? That's right, I practice voice. I was actually a bit surprised at how much I was actually doing more or less well, considering it's been at least a month since I last really practiced, was having some wierd... interference of some kind during my warm-ups, and have at all recently been listening primarily to Moya Brennan (who's not exactly a classical singer) and a bunch of random easy-listening-ish pop singers while at work. I can definitely tell I'm out of practice, but still, it was a good deal better than I expected for some reason...

Cut for randomness )

Yay! I just got back from seeing Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix. It was my first time going to a midnight screening (since I sadly had to miss the one for LWW), so I must admit to being both a bit apprehensive and excited about it, but I think it went rather well. I ended up just going with my sister, and fortunately she decided to get our tickets in advance, since they were sold out by the time we actually went over to watch. The start really wasn't very promising thanks to technical difficulties; I'm not quite sure what happened, but apparently something went wrong and it took them a while to figure out exactly what the problem was. It finally started about half-an-hour after midnight, though, and it all went smoothly after that, so it was all good. We even got a good amount of audience participation (including the guy who exclaimed 'Yeah!' or something right as Harry and Cho kissed, causing some laughter that wasn't quite appropriate for the scene...), and no one was really talking too much during the movie so we all got to enjoy it pretty well.

The movie itself was pretty good, but as I probably should have expected, it could have been better. I liked the visual style of this director (it had this strongly 'artsy' style to it, that quickly became apparent from the very first scene). Also, I totally understand the need to cut things down to condense 800+ pages into a 2.5 hour movie, but there was just so much that had to be left out, and some of it I really missed. I loved Luna, though; Evanna was completely perfect for the role, and I thought she did more than justice to my favorite HP character ever. I loved Neville, too (my second favorite HP character!), but I wish they didn't have to cut down so many of his moments from the book. Still, I did love it overall, and I definitely look forward to going to see it again on Saturday. :D

[ music | Moya Brennan - An Irish Christmas ]

I got myself some new books now! Some more are on the way, but so far, I have two new music books, and Moya Brennan's Christmas CD. I've been listening to the CD all day, and I'm definitely in love. <3 But, of course, I can't mention my new books without mentioning the largest collection of them all: I finally have my very own copies of the first six Harry Potter books! I suppose I jumped on the HP bandwagon a bit late since I've just been starting to get obsessed within a couple months of DH coming out, but better late than never, I suppose. Anyway, now I can read them without having to worry about overdue fines or any of that sort of thing, and I can hopefully have read them all by the time I get DH. (It's not too bad since I've been reading them out of order thanks to library availability... I just have to finish HBP, then read CoS and GoF, and possibly even reread OotP before I see the movie...)

Speaking of DH, I can't believe it's already getting spoilers on the internet! Granted, I'm pretty much convinced the only big one so far was a fake. I kinda stupidly decided to read it (but only after reading many assurances from other devoted fans!), and... well, let's just say I wasn't very impressed. There wasn't any actual text from the book, and while the majority of it sounded dubious at best, the last bit was definitely too far off the wall to be the real thing. Still, fake or not, spoilers of varied quality are definitely going to be coming out before long, and I'm already starting to figure out how in the world I can stay spoiler-free without become a full-blown hermit. I just have to see OotP when it comes out, but I can't go after the DH comes out and before I get it from Amazon; suppose the people sitting behind me start ranting/raving about whatever happens at the end of the book? But I'm not even safe before DH comes out, because those people behind me might be talking about the latest Internet spoilers instead. Still, I suppose that scenario is better than the former, since I can at least convince myself that the spoiler is a fake.

Well, I think I'm officially starting to sound like an obsessed over-worried HP fan right now...

I've got myself a new job! I technically started over the weekend when I did orientation, but the actual work part of things starts tomorrow... when I have to show up well before I'm normally even awake. Oh well, it's definitely better than having to fill out approximately hundreds of applications all summer, and I'm sure the job will be fun once I get used to the odd hours (including getting up really early this week, and working literally all night next week... yay).

And I've also gotten myself an upgrade, and some new icons to match. Not really big news, I suppose, but hey, more icons is always good, right? (And speaking of which, I keep telling myself I need to hurry up and make a few more icons so I can make an icon post in the near future. And here I was thinking I'd be able to make more now that I'm home from school...)

Well, school's officially over for me until fall! I even got the results back on my juries today... I didn't do too horribly, but it still could have been better. Still, exciting as it is to be done and about ready to go home, it's sad having to say goodbye to so many people. I've been here long enough to have several of my school friends graduating this time around, and a couple of others probably aren't coming back for whatever reason (one I only found out a couple days ago when she told me she was applying for a different school; apparently they have a better program in what she wants...). So... needless to say, my mood's kinda mixed at the moment. At least I can try to keep in contact with everyone who's leaving...
